Today we decided to shift things around in the yard. We wanted to create a somewhat tropical garden compared to the traditional annual garden and the hundreds of potted plants that were here before. So we set out to create a little planting area in front of the house by the curb. We had purchased two sago palms at a garage sale for $3 each and we planted one of them in this front bed. It's in the center of the photo and a big piece of driftwood is behind it.
We transplanted some ferns and I moved some liriope from an area in the backyard, broke it up into small clusters and planted it along the sidewalk. Everyone uses it here as a border. It makes small purple flowers. Eventually it will fill in and look nice. We did our little "pouring flower pot" idea with a plant in front of it.
Looking at it from the other side, you can see we planted this big elephant ear type plant. I don't know what it's called, but I've seen one in town that has a really unusual white flower. It was in a pot and we decided to plant it. It seems to like shade. It will perk up in a few days. This will all look better once the plants take hold and we can get some kind of mulch down. It's popular here to use pine needles as mulch. We have no idea where to get it though. I guess a visit to a local garden center is in order.
We put these two gigantic potted ferns up against the side of the house.
It makes the house and driveway area look softer and more inviting.
We planted the second sago palm in the backyard (there in the foreground below).
It will have plenty of room to spread there. Further back is a nice fan palm tree.
So we did all that and it didn't cost a penny. Just a little hard work.
And this guy was on the house today. Looks like a freakin' alien!
The bugs down here are like nothing I've ever seen. Some, like this one, you can put a collar on and name Spike. Honestly!
Spike is cute, but tell only if spike stays out of the house :)
